I volunteer
as one in personal Recovery
choosing to do service
in an arena
in which I
am naïve ~
intrinsically naïve.
Invited by a chair leader
somehow finding the right place.
A front desk angel
welcomes and directs my journey.
Anticipating fragility and anguish
I find myself
traversing deeper
and deeper
and ever more deeply
into lock after gated lock of
corridors ~
long hallways with
double-doored security ~
into entrails of
psychiatric purgatory
all called
lockdown
rehab.
Residents
alive
wanting to change
willing to change
though seemingly stuck
scared
searching.
Glimmers of
hope
bounce off
neutral
painted
institutional
walls.
Eyes plead.
Honored am I
to witness this world.
A bastille
of hope.
